“The Education of the Pillars” (Mark 5) SERIES MESSAGE #5

THE EDUCATION OF THE PILLARS  (Mark 5:37)

FBC Earlville 11-25-12 10:30 AM  Rev. J.B. Stopford, Pastor

INTRODUCTION    Today’s “Special”:  “Table for 3”:

A group of 40-year-old buddies – David, Michael and Steven – discussed where they should meet for dinner. Finally it was agreed upon that they should meet at the Ocean View Kosher Bar & Grill because the waiters and waitresses there were very young and very fast.

10 years later at 50 years of age, the group once again discussed where they should meet for dinner. Finally it was agreed that they should meet at the Ocean View Kosher Bar & Grill because the food there was very good and the wine selection was good also.

10 years later at 60 years of age, the group once again discussed where they should meet for dinner. Finally it was agreed that they should meet at the Ocean View Kosher Bar & Grill because they could eat there in peace and quiet and the restaurant had a beautiful view of the ocean.

10 years later, at 70 years of age, the group once again discussed where they should meet for dinner. Finally it was agreed that they should meet at the Ocean View Kosher Bar & Grill because the restaurant was wheel-chair accessible, the restrooms were close and they even had an elevator.

10 years later, at 80 years of age, the group once again discussed where they should meet for dinner. Finally it was agreed that they should meet at the Ocean View Kosher Bar & Grill because they had never been there before.

We have been having a close look at the lives of Peter, James, and John – Jesus‘ closest disciples. In the next 2 weeks, we will look at their communion with Jesus, and in their consecration for Him.  Today we are going to see 2 lessons up close – we’ll call them, “the education of the pillars”.       PRAYER

#1   THE PUBLIC LESSON FOR THE TWELVE  (vs. 21-34)

  • vs. 31 “the disciples” – i.e., all 12 are with Him
  • Intro to Jairus and his grief (vs. 21-23)
  • Illus.:  A Thanksgiving Night Wal*Mart moment (v. 24)  My wife and I fully understand what the disciples were talking about!  Yes, we went to Wal*Mart on Thanksgiving night in order to get a good deal on a TV we desired to purchase.  It took 15 minutes to get the TV, and it took almost 75 minutes to pay for it – the crowd was that great!
  • The healing of the woman (vs. 25-29)
  • The 2 “immediately’s”

#1:  She knows she is healed (v. 29)

#2:  He knows power has gone out of Him (v. 30)

  • The focus of the 12: on Jairus and not on the woman (v. 31):  “we know You’re the eternal Son of God, Creator, Sustainer of the universe, but ‘Hello!’ – You felt someone touch You?”
  • The unnamed woman fell down in fear, was raised by faith (v. 33)
  • PUBLIC LESSON:  the unexpected ministry often happens when our focus is on people and not on the Lord.  WHO HAVE WE MISSED while busy doing other good things?

#2   THE PRIVATE LESSONS FOR THE THREE  (vs. 35-43)

  • The heaving of the hearts (v. 35), the hearing of the voice of peace (v. 36)
  • 2 times (v. 37 and v. 40) the 3 are given private insights into Jesus’ heart
  • PRIVATE LESSONS:

#1  There will be mockers (v. 40) – see John 15:18-20; 16:33

#2  Jesus specializes in the impossible (vs. 40-42) – see Luke 1:37

#3  Jesus brings joy to burdened lives (v. 42 – “nearly out of their minds with joy” – Phillips translation)

#4   A resurrected life needs FOOD! (v. 43) – see Jeremiah 15:16

CONCLUSION

The public lesson:  Jesus loves to interrupt our lives with His presence, His ministry.

The private lessons:  Jesus specializes in the impossible, and cares for the all-round person.

We need to ask ourselves 2 questions:

#1   Am I that attentive to what He is doing in lives around me?

#2   Is there any impossibles in my life that need His touch?
