“The Consecration of the Pillars” (Mark 10) SERIES MESSAGE #7

THE CONSECRATION OF THE PILLARS  (Mark 10)

FBC Earlville 12-09-12 10:30 AM  Rev. J.B. Stopford, Pastor

INTRODUCTION    Today’s “Special”:  “Unique Couple”

A Frenchman walks into a restaurant with a parrot on his shoulder.

The maitre-de asks, “Where did you get that thing?”

The parrot replies, “In France, there are millions of them!”

Today is our last message in this series on those 3 disciples who were identified by the Apostle Paul as “pillars of the faith”. This is a devotional of sorts to encourage Jordyn on the occasion of her baptism.  Peter, James, and John – they were selected out from the 12 by our Savior, from that beginning they walked with our Savior, saw amazing things with the Savior.  One wonders,   how did they finish in life?       PRAYER

#1  PETER –  “I HAVE LEFT ALL & FOLLOWED YOU”  (Mark 10:28)

  •   Peter’s statement (v. 28)
  • The Savior’s response (vs. 29-31)
  • Peter’s life, and his death – John 21:18-19: 18 Most assuredly, I say to you, when you were younger, you girded yourself and walked where you wished; but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will gird you and carry you where you do not wish.” 19 This He spoke, signifying by what death he would glorify God. And when He had spoken this, He said to him, “Follow Me.”

*  See also 2 Peter 1:10–15  He was identified in death with his Savior by being crucified.  But tradition and the Scriptures seem to indicate that in deference to his Savior, he was crucified upside down.

  •   Is my heart resigned to die to sin in life, and for Christ in death?

#2  JAMES – THE CUP & THE BAPTISM, part 1 (Mark 10:37, 38)

  •   The Savior’s challenge (vs. 32-34)
  •   The disciple’s inquiry (vs. 35-37)
  •   The Savior’s focus (vs. 38-40)
  •   The end result – Acts 12:1,2:  “Now about that time Herod the king stretched out his hand to harass some from the church. Then he killed James the brother of John with the sword.
  •   The Savior’s challenge to us – John 12:25: “He who loves his life will lose it, and he who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life.
  •   Is my heart resigned to hate my life in this world, so that Jesus only will be seen in my life?

#3  JOHN – THE CUP & THE BAPTISM, part 2 (Mark 10:37,38)

  •   The Savior’s challenge (vs. 32-34)
  •   The end result – Revelation 1:2, 9:  “2 who bore witness to the word of God, and to the testimony of Jesus Christ, to all things that he saw.   9 I, John, both your brother and companion in the tribulation and kingdom and patience of Jesus Christ, was on the island that is called Patmos for the word of God and for the testimony of Jesus Christ.”
  •   Is my heart resigned to surrender to God’s Word and His testimony, regardless of where it may take me in this life?

CONCLUSION

“Pillars” – “supports, monuments”.  We have been challenged by these 3.  But perhaps their greatest challenge is not how they lived, but how they finished.

Revelation 12:11, of the Revelation saints, John wrote, “they did not love their lives to the death.”

Today we will see Jordyn Paul’s testimony of her love for her Savior.  Note her life verse.  She will be identified with Jesus her Savior not only in her surrender in the waters of baptism, but also in her heart’s resolve of what she can do with her Savior’s help.  Are we?
